Switching guide

Switch to Passiro.
Plan it, test it, go live.

Replacing a cookie banner takes more than swapping one script for another. Map your current setup, keep the records you need, test Passiro on a test page, then switch in a single release with one banner active at a time.

Four steps to a clean switch.

Most of the work happens before you go live. Map and test in advance, and the switch itself becomes a single, simple release.

  1. Map your current setup

Before you change anything, write down what your current banner does and where it is installed. This list becomes the checklist for your new setup.

    • Where the old banner is installed: a script in the page head, a CMS plugin, a Google Tag Manager tag or template, or your theme’s code.
    • Which tags and scripts depend on consent, such as analytics, ads, chat and video embeds, and which category each one belongs to.
    • Whether you use Google Consent Mode or IAB TCF, and how each is set up.
    • The regions and languages your banner is shown in, and the categories visitors can choose.
    • Where your cookie policy and cookie declaration are linked, for example in the banner, the footer and your privacy pages.
  2. Save your configuration and consent history

Your old provider holds the records of the consents visitors have already given. Keep what you need before anything is removed or cancelled.

    • Export the consent logs you need as documentation, covering the retention period your organisation requires.
    • Save screenshots or exports of your banner texts, categories and settings, in every language you use.
    • Keep a copy of your current cookie list and cookie policy.

Consents cannot be imported into Passiro. Passiro starts its own consent records when its banner goes live, so visitors are asked for their consent once more after the switch.

  3. Set up and test Passiro

Build the new setup while the old banner keeps running on your live website.

    • Create your account and add your website. Passiro scans it and builds a cookie declaration from the results.
    • Recreate your banner design and texts in the visual editor, then set your categories, script blocking, regions and Google Consent Mode v2.
    • Install the Passiro script at the top of the head on a staging site or test page where the old banner is not running.
    • Run the installation check in Passiro, then test accept, reject, change and withdrawal.
    See the four checks
  4. Complete the switch

Go live in one release, so your website never shows two banners, or none.

    • Remove the old banner and install the Passiro script in the same release.
    • Update the links to your cookie policy and cookie declaration.
    • Run the four checks again on the live website, on several types of pages.
    • Keep access to the old provider until you have every record you need, then cancel the old subscription.

What to set up again, copy over or leave behind.

There is no import tool for another provider’s settings. You recreate your setup in Passiro, using the notes and exports from steps 1 and 2.

  • Set up again in Passiro

Recreate these in your Passiro account.

    • Banner design and layout
    • Banner texts and languages
    • Categories and the scripts in each
    • Script blocking
    • Regional rules for where each banner is shown
    • Google Consent Mode v2 and, on Pro and above, IAB TCF
    • Team members and their access
  • Copy over from your old setup

Bring these across by copying them from your notes and exports.

    • Banner wording and category descriptions
    • Brand colours and logo (your own logo needs Pro or above)
    • Your list of tools and tags
    • Your cookie policy text, checked against the new scan
  • Cannot be transferred

These stay with your old provider.

    • Consents visitors have already given: they cannot be imported
    • The old provider’s reports and consent analytics

Keep the exports from step 2 as your record of the earlier period.

Keep one banner active, never two.

Two consent tools on the same page show two banners, can store conflicting choices and send mixed signals to your tags. When you go live, make sure the old tool is gone everywhere.

  • Remove the old script, CMS plugin or Google Tag Manager tag in full. Hiding the old banner is not enough, because its script can still run.

  • Clear cached pages and your CDN, so no visitor gets a page that still loads the old script.

  • In Google Tag Manager, look for the old tool’s tags, templates and consent default commands, and remove any duplicates.

  • Make sure the Google Consent Mode default is set only once. A leftover default from the old tool can contradict the choices Passiro sends.

  • Open your website in a private window and check that only the Passiro banner appears, on several types of pages.

Check every choice.

Test in a private window, so no earlier choice is remembered. Run all four checks on your test page, then again on the live website after the switch.

  • Accept

Accept all categories in the banner.

    Cookies
Optional cookies are set only after you accept.
    Tags
The tags in every category fire.
    Consent Mode
Google Tag Assistant shows the signals updated to granted.
    Consent record
The acceptance appears in your consent records.
  • Reject

In a new private window, reject all optional categories.

    Cookies
    No optional cookies are set.
    Tags
Tags in optional categories stay blocked.
    Consent Mode
    The signals stay denied.
    Consent record
    The rejection is recorded too.
  • Change preferences

Reopen the banner with the cookie settings button and allow one category only.

    Cookies
Only cookies from that category are added.
    Tags
Only the tags in that category fire.
    Consent Mode
Each signal matches the categories you allowed.
    Consent record
A new record shows the changed choice.
  • Withdraw consent

After accepting, reopen the settings, turn the optional categories off and save.

    Cookies
Note which cookies remain: withdrawing consent does not delete every cookie already stored.
    Tags
Tags in those categories no longer fire.
    Consent Mode
    The signals return to denied.
    Consent record
A new record shows the withdrawal.

Google Tag Assistant shows the Consent Mode signals, and your browser’s developer tools show cookies and requests. New consent records can take up to about an hour to appear in Passiro.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import my existing consents into Passiro?

No. Consents given through another tool cannot be imported into Passiro. Keep the consent logs from your old provider as documentation for the earlier period. Passiro records new choices from the moment its banner goes live.

Will visitors see the banner again after the switch?

Yes, once. Passiro does not know the choices visitors made in your old banner, so it asks them again on their next visit. After that, their choice is remembered for the consent validity period you set.

How long does a switch take?

It depends on how many tags, regions and languages your setup has. Mapping and testing take most of the time; the switch itself is a single release. Plan it for a time when you can run the checks straight after it goes live.

Can I run both banners while I test?

Only on a staging site or test page that visitors do not use. Never run both on your live website: visitors would see two banners, and two tools would handle the same tags and signals differently.

Do I need a developer?

Not always. If you can edit your website’s head or its site-wide code settings, you can install the Passiro script and remove the old banner yourself. A developer helps when the old tool is built into your theme, or when you want to inspect cookies and network requests in detail.

What happens to my records with the old provider?

They stay with the old provider. Export the consent logs and reports you need before you cancel, and store them for as long as your retention period requires. The old provider’s terms decide how long you can still access them.

Which Passiro plan do I need to switch?

You can switch on Free. It includes the visual editor, 25 banner languages, script blocking, geo-targeting, scanning, Google Consent Mode v2 and consent records. Choose Pro or above for your own logo and IAB TCF.
